Gravenmaw, the Slow Collapse

Deity of Decay, Ruin, and the Slow Collapse

Scholars of the Concordant Tread record a minor deity of decay said to walk backwards through domains, leaving no trace. They record it as a curiosity. Gravenmaw would prefer that, and has cultivated the impression for a very long time.

The god's argument is the Discordant's, taken to its unhurried conclusion. Structures need not be broken — they are already breaking, continuously, everywhere, and the only thing holding any of them together is sustained effort by people who will eventually get tired. Gravenmaw does not need to attack. It needs to wait, and to make sure nobody notices how tired they are getting.

The Skein of Bones is its great cathedral: a fossil desert of leviathan ribcages where "nothing ends, it merely tangles itself anew."

Domains:

  • Decay: The continuous, unassisted coming-apart of everything made. Gravenmaw's power is present everywhere at all times and is simply stronger where maintenance has lapsed.
  • Ruin: The finished state — the thing no longer being held together by anyone. The faith treats ruins as completed works rather than failures, and tends them with something like affection.
  • The Slow Collapse: Failure spread thin enough to be mistaken for stability. The faith's central observation and the reason it is so seldom recognised as a threat.

Manifestation and Symbols:

  • Gravenmaw is depicted as an arch mid-fall, the keystone already out and the stones not yet landed — a deliberate answer to Dithrir's intact standard and the Harmonizer's keystone.
  • Its sigil is rust in the shape of a rivet, the fastening gone and only its stain remaining.
  • Its presence shows as maintenance quietly not happening. The repair is scheduled and rescheduled. Nobody neglects anything; things merely never quite get done.

Doctrine and Influence:

  • "Nothing needs to be destroyed. It needs to be left alone."
    • The founding teaching, and the reason Gravenmaw's faithful are almost never criminals — they are absentees.
  • "Walk backwards. Leave nothing to repair."
    • The god's own method, taken as a discipline: act in ways that cannot be traced, because a traced decay gets fixed.

Worshippers:

  • The Ashenfang, the corrupted clan that weaponises death and binds souls, who read Gravenmaw's patience as permission and its indifference as blessing.
  • Scavengers and bone-pickers of the Skein, who work the ribcages and leave offerings in the joints.
  • Exhausted caretakers — stewards, wardens and keepers who have stopped believing the thing they maintain can be maintained. The faith's quietest and largest congregation.
