Deity of Obligation, the Ledger, and Owed Silence

In Grayspire, betrayal is currency — traded more commonly than coin, and a handshake tonight may mean a blade tomorrow. The harbour has no temple and never wanted one.

Nivenne does not need a temple. Nivenne needs a book.

The god's teaching is that Grayspire's reputation for treachery is a misunderstanding. Nobody there betrays anyone at random; they betray according to a precise accounting of who is owed what, and the only people surprised by it are those who were not keeping the same book. Treachery is just bookkeeping performed by the better-informed party.

Where the Whisperer holds leverage as a thing to acquire, Nivenne holds it as a thing to record. The distinction matters to the faithful and to nobody else.

Domains:

• Obligation: What is owed, whether or not it was agreed. Nivenne's power gathers around debts of favour, blood and silence — never around a debt with a contract, which belongs to lesser gods.
• The Ledger: The private accounting of who stands where. Kept in cipher, reviewed constantly, acted on rarely. The faith regards the keeping as the devotion and the collecting as a vulgar afterthought.
• Owed Silence: The debt paid by not speaking. Nivenne's clergy consider this the most valuable currency in circulation and the most commonly defaulted on.

Manifestation and Symbols:

• Nivenne is depicted as a figure writing with its back to the room, the page angled away from the viewer.
• Its sigil is a tally with more marks on one side, the imbalance being the whole message.
• Its presence shows as people remembering what they owe. Old favours resurface unprompted at inconvenient moments. Nobody is reminded; they simply find they have known all along.

Doctrine and Influence:

• "Everyone owes. The only question is whether they have counted."
  • The founding teaching. Nivenne holds that the naive are not more honest than the treacherous, merely worse at arithmetic.
• "A silence you were paid for is a debt you are still carrying."
  • The faith's warning to its own: taking money to say nothing does not close the account, it opens one.
