Sylvenar, the Steady Green
Deity of Verdure, Quickening, and the Long Green
Everyone knows the Whispering Woods are dangerous. Almost nobody notices how much less dangerous they are than they ought to be.
A forest grown over a buried Scale should be an unlivable thing — magic pouring up through the roots with nothing to shape it, everything growing wrong at once. That was the Woods, once. What changed is that something settled into the Silent Scale and began to hold. Sylvenar is why the paths mostly stay where they were, why the Echo Trees only murmur instead of screaming, why a forest sitting on raw resonance produces oaks instead of horrors.
The instability travellers complain of — the Shifting Bloom, the vanishing landmarks — is the edge of the Woods, where the hold thins. The deep forest is the calmest ground in eastern Iridia, and the people who live there know it, which is why they are so unfriendly to visitors with shovels.
Domains:
- Verdure: Green life at rest, holding its shape. Not growth — staying grown. Sylvenar's power is at its strongest in old forest that has not changed in a century, and weakest in anything newly broken.
- Quickening: The moment dead-looking things turn out to be alive. Seed-split, bud-break, the first movement in something everyone had written off.
- The Long Green: The span no single life sees the whole of. Sylvenar's clergy reckon in centuries and are notoriously unhelpful about next week.
Manifestation and Symbols:
- Sylvenar is depicted as a standing figure entirely overgrown, the outline barely readable under moss and bark, and completely still.
- Its sigil is a root closed around a stone — holding, not crushing.
- Its presence is an absence of incident. Where Sylvenar is strong, nothing strange happens for a very long time, which is not what most people expect a god to feel like.
Doctrine and Influence:
- "Growth is easy. Holding is the miracle."
- Anything can sprout in raw resonance. Sylvenar's faith is interested in what survives the second year, and treats sudden abundance as a symptom rather than a blessing.
- "Do not dig."
Worshippers:
- The Grunthar Orcs, moss-clad and antler-crowned, "guardians shaped to protect the fading green" — who range the Blooming Skein and treat its bone-gardens as Sylvenar's furthest shrine.
- Foresters, herbalists and the hedge-doctors of the eastern reach, who pray before cutting and mean it.
- Nobody in the Cult of Dy, which is digging for the Scales and which Sylvenar's faithful regard as the single greatest danger in Iridia.
"I am not growing anything. I am keeping it."
