Miravel, the Kept Vigil

Deity of Comfort, Convalescence, and the Quiet Room

Miravel is a god of the weeks after.

Not the wound, not the cure — the long middle, where nothing dramatic happens and someone has to be there anyway. Its faith holds that the decisive act in most recoveries is not a spell or a draught but the fact that somebody sat up through the third night, when the patient was neither dying nor mending and there was nothing to do but remain.

The Red Palm Hall in the City of Or has practised this for generations without naming it. The Hall follows no single deity by policy, and its physicians are proud of that; several of them find it irritating to be told they have a patron. Sylieth, who prays there to a god from another world entirely, is said to have remarked that she is glad the local one finally showed up.

Domains:

  • Comfort: The reduction of suffering that does not cure anything. Miravel's power gathers around clean linen, a lowered voice, a hand held for no medical reason whatsoever.
  • Convalescence: The slow return. Miravel's clergy are trained to recognise that this stage kills more people than the injury did, through boredom, poverty and being sent back to work.
  • The Quiet Room: A space kept deliberately dull. The faith regards this as a genuine act of construction and defends such rooms fiercely against anyone with something urgent to say.

Manifestation and Symbols:

  • Miravel is depicted as a seated figure beside an empty bed, waiting rather than attending, because the vigil outlasts the patient either way.
  • Its sigil is a covered lamp — light kept low on purpose.
  • Its presence shows as time passing easily. Long nights go quickly for the watcher and slowly for the pain, which the faith insists is the correct arrangement and not a coincidence.

Doctrine and Influence:

  • "The cure is the short part. Do not mistake it for the work."
    • Miravel's clergy hold that any healer who loses interest once the patient is stable has done half a job and should say so.
  • "Stay, even when staying is useless. Especially then."
    • Presence is the sacrament. A follower who leaves because there is nothing more to be done has misunderstood the entire faith.

Worshippers:

  • The Red Palm Hall, which continues to describe itself as non-denominational and has simply stopped arguing about it.
  • Hospice-keepers, night nurses and the families of the long-ill, who make up the bulk of the faith and almost none of its clergy.
  • Soldiers invalided out, who tend to arrive at Miravel late and angrily.
