Quellith, the Baited Trail
Deity of Rumour, Misdirection, and the Planted Word
Gurdalk's Gang do not guard treasure. They bait it.
The goblin tribes of the Mountains of Triz long ago worked out that a half-charted range full of tunnels is not defended by holding positions — it is defended by ensuring that everyone who enters already believes something false about where they are going. The traps are theatrical on purpose. The rumours about the traps do more work than the traps.
Quellith is the god of that principle, and unlike the Whisperer above it, Quellith is not interested in advantage over individuals. It is interested in terrain — in what a whole population takes for granted, and how cheaply that can be made wrong.
Domains:
- Rumour: Belief travelling without a source. Quellith's power gathers wherever a thing is widely known and cannot be traced to anyone, and dies the moment it is attributed.
- Misdirection: Attention aimed away. The faith regards this as an act of construction, not deception — you are building a road for someone's mind to walk down.
- The Planted Word: A single deliberate falsehood released into a community and then left entirely alone to grow. The faith holds that tending it afterwards is the commonest error.
Manifestation and Symbols:
- Quellith is depicted as a figure pointing confidently in one direction while facing another, and the rendering is always slightly comic.
- Its sigil is a footprint pointing the wrong way, made by a boot worn backwards.
- Its presence shows as confident agreement about something untrue. Whole valleys become certain of a fact nobody can source, and act on it with great competence.
Doctrine and Influence:
- "Plant it once and walk away. Tending is how you get caught."
- The founding discipline. A rumour that needs maintaining was never going to survive, and the maintainer leaves fingerprints.
- "Do not hold the pass. Hold what they think is in it."
- The tactical doctrine that made Quellith a war-god in a range with almost no soldiers.
Worshippers:
- Gurdalk's Gang and the goblin trap-makers of the Mountains of Triz, whose guerrilla theatre is devotional practice performed for an audience that does not know it is attending.
- Guide clans who navigate by "part cartography and part prophecy", and who decide which parts travellers are told.
- Caravan scouts and skirmishers, who pray to Quellith before a run and to Aelfar during it.
"There is nothing in that pass. Everyone knows there is. Both of those are my work."
