K — Castle Ravenloft

Entered [session 23](/curse-of-strahd/sessions/session 23). The party is inside as of [session 24](/curse-of-strahd/sessions/session 24).

Strahd's seat. The party received a formal invitation in session 14; the gates opened on their own when they arrived ([session 23](/curse-of-strahd/sessions/session 23)).

Rooms seen so far:

  • The Gates (s23): open without being touched. Cold fog, lightning, the keep's doors standing open with torchlight spilling out.
  • Round Entry Hall (s23): circular, half-decayed painted ceiling held up by floor-to-ceiling stone statues of monsters. The statues shift when watched; they are blind, and their hearing is excellent. A floating silver dish serves rotten pastries; a detached pale hand takes theft personally — it accepted Mark (promised a pedicure) and remains hostile to everyone else.
  • Dining Hall (s23): court-length table, three chandeliers, mirrors, and the organ Strahd plays. The wine is blood. A cabinet holds one of Mark's former companions, kept alive as a source.
  • The Study (s23): floor-to-ceiling books. Where Strahd offered Logi the knowledge to restore his wildfire and took a blood contract in payment. The new Tarokka spread (s25) names this room as Strahd's location (K37). What the contract actually bought was a brokered pact, delivered at Ashenwood — see logi.md.
  • The Kitchen (s23): a working kitchen. Where Vess was held in stag form and beheaded by Mark; where Mark later found the Cleaver of the Last Cut (s24). A basement lies beneath it — where Strahd showed Taara his version of events (s24).
  • The Gallery (s24): portraits floor to ceiling, centuries deep. At the far end, kept lit and clean: a wedding portrait three times the size of any other — young Strahd and Taara. The lectern beneath it held [Kept Memories](/curse-of-strahd/items/kept memories) until Strahd moved the book.
  • The Library (s24, s25): where Strahd called in Logi's contract and built the case that got him banished — and, at the end of the [session 25](/curse-of-strahd/sessions/session 25) epilogue, where Logi's own portal put him back down on the same shelf. A room of centuries-old paper, and the first place his unquenchable fire could be cast.
  • Tower Bedroom (s24): Strahd and Taara's talks happen here. The bookshelf now holds [Kept Memories](/curse-of-strahd/items/kept memories); Taara saw it shelved without knowing what it is.
