Kasimir and the Amber Temple

Area N9a: Kasimir's Hovel, Vistani Camp (southwest of Vallaki) → Area X: The Amber Temple

Status (as of session 24): Dormant — never met. The party passed through Vallaki without visiting the Vistani camp, and Kasimir said he would not wait indefinitely. Decide whether he is still at the camp, has found other companions, or has attempted the journey alone. One thread has moved toward the party instead: Patrina's crypt is in the catacombs of Castle Ravenloft, and the party is inside the castle now.

Overview

Kasimir Velikov is the leader of the dusk elves — the last survivors of a race that is all but forgotten. He lives in a small house at the base of the hill on the eastern perimeter of the Vistani camp (area N9a), guarded by three cloaked dusk elf warriors. He is old even by elven standards and carries a grief that has been running for four centuries.

His sister was Patrina Velikovna, one of Strahd's old brides. Patrina was killed by her own people — stoned to death by the dusk elves themselves — to prevent Strahd from fully claiming her. Strahd's retaliation was precise and total: he had all the female dusk elves put to death. Every one of them. The surviving elves cannot reproduce. They are a people in slow extinction, kept in Vallaki under Vistani observation, forbidden by Strahd from leaving the domain.

Kasimir believes Patrina has repented. He has been receiving dreams he believes are sent by her spirit, calling to him from the catacombs beneath Castle Ravenloft. He has been looking for a way to resurrect her for decades. He believes the answer is at the Amber Temple.

Kasimir

He will speak to the party if they approach him and seem to be heading toward or against Strahd. He will not raise the conversation himself — he has been disappointed before.

What he tells them:

  • There is a temple deep in the Balinok Mountains, carved from stone, older than Strahd. It holds secrets. Strahd made his original pact there — the pact that made him a vampire and doomed the valley. The secret to breaking that pact may be inside.
  • He does not know for certain. His sister's dreams pointed him toward the temple, and he believes her. He says this carefully — he knows how it sounds.
  • He wants to go there. He cannot go alone. He has been looking for people capable enough to make the journey survivable.

He will not tell the party everything immediately. He will tell them what he believes is true and hold back what he is uncertain about. If pressed about Patrina, he will say she was a woman who made terrible choices when she was young, has paid for them with centuries, and deserves more than to wait in a crypt until Strahd's domain ends one way or another.

He has a ring of warmth that he will not give up — the temple is carved from a mountain at extreme altitude, −10°F inside, and the ring is what makes the journey possible for him. He will share the cold weather knowledge openly.

The Dusk Elves

There are no women. There are no children. What remains of the dusk elf race is a handful of old men who have been watching their people die out for four hundred years under the authority of Strahd and the observation of Vistani who are not their friends.

They keep a low profile. They do not start fights they cannot win. They have survived by being too small to be worth destroying and too contained to be dangerous. Kasimir has held them together through patience and the specific discipline of someone who still believes something can change.

If the party earns Kasimir's trust, the dusk elves will be quietly useful — trackers, watchers, people who know this valley better than almost anyone alive. They will not fight Strahd directly. They have already tried that, in a way, and the result was the extinction of their women.

The Amber Temple

Area X — deep in the Balinok Mountains, south of Tsolenka Pass. The journey is dangerous. The temperature inside the temple is extreme (−10°F, −23°C). Characters without cold weather protection or magical warmth are subject to exhaustion effects each hour.

The temple was built by a secret society of good-aligned wizards who needed a vault for evil they had captured — dark vestiges, remnants of dead malevolent entities, hoard of forbidden knowledge. The wizards are long dead. The evil they contained is still there.

Vestiges: Entities imprisoned in amber, offering gifts in exchange for a sliver of the visitor's soul or virtue. They are patient. They are not safe. Strahd made his pact with one of them here. The gifts are real. The cost is real. The party will be tempted — the vestiges know what each person wants.

Exethanter: The lich who took over the temple after the wizards died. He has been in the temple for centuries and is falling apart — memory gone, spells forgotten. He is not hostile. He is a deteriorating thing that once had purpose and no longer fully remembers what it was. He can answer some questions if the party has patience with his condition.

What Kasimir Actually Wants

He wants to resurrect Patrina. He has not told the party the full reason he is going to the temple — the vestiges there can grant the ability to raise the dead in ways that ordinary magic cannot. He intends to use them.

This is the thing he knows is wrong and is going to do anyway. He has been watching his people die for four centuries. His sister is in a crypt. He will make one bad bargain if it means she comes back.

If the party accompanies him and learns what he intends, they will have to decide what to do with that knowledge. Patrina was one of Strahd's brides. Her resurrection may not go the way Kasimir hopes. The vestiges are not neutral parties in what she becomes.

The Difficulty

The journey to the temple is its own session — Tsolenka Pass, the cold, whatever is on the road. The temple itself is a dungeon of considerable danger with an ethical complication at the center.

The party is heading to Ravenloft. The temple is a significant detour — further south and higher into the mountains. But the information inside it (Strahd's original pact, the nature of the Dark Powers, what might break the curse) could be the most useful knowledge available before they walk into the castle. And if the vestiges are not just a danger but an opportunity — the party has people carrying things they cannot put down.

The vestiges will notice what the party carries. Vess lost Nyss and does not know it. Myra knows what she is now and carries a sister bought back by wish, plus a secret arrangement with Strahd. Logi, if he ever comes here, carries a hole where his wildfire was. Taara carries half a marriage. The offers write themselves.
