Waking Vess
Area K: Castle Ravenloft — wherever the party keeps her
Status (as of session 26): Closed — she woke, and none of it happened. Vess woke as the stag, walked out of Castle Ravenloft, reached the Pendant of Nyss outside, became a fox and left. The party watched and did not stop her. She never woke as herself, so every question below went unanswered and can no longer be answered through her. The lie about her death now stands with the only witness who could break it gone from the valley.
What actually happened at the waking is in sessions/session 26.md; what she is — elf dead, stag true, fox is Nyss — is in vess.md.
What this leaves live:
- The lie survives her. Vess walked out alive, which Strahd used at the breakfast table against Logi — and then wrote over three people with the version where Logi and Mark did kill her. The contradiction is now a thing the party argues about, not a thing a witness settles.
- Mark's ears. He cut them off the night before she woke, knowing who she was. Nobody knows. Nobody noticed them missing.
- The stolen memories stay stolen. Nyss and Myra's friendship are still in the Memory Vault (
quests/quest-brother-aldric.md), and she left without ever learning they were taken. - The d12 never rolled. The threshold question is unresolved and no longer attached to a player character.
- She has the pendant. It left the castle with her.
Everything below is the pre-waking record, kept as written.
What She Wakes Into
Vess went unconscious in one world and will wake in another. The gaps, in the order they will hit:
- Time. She fled the Blue Water Inn the night Myra transformed (session 20). Everything since — the capture, the stag form, the kitchen — happened to a body she was held inside without control. She does not know how long it has been.
- The room. She is in Castle Ravenloft, the destination she was walking toward when her life was still her own.
- The party. Corvin is gone (session 21). Logi — one of the two people who saved her — is banished for supposedly killing her. Two strangers stand in the party: Yager, and Mark, the man who beheaded her.
- The lie. Taara believes Logi and Mark killed Vess together. Vess's testimony is the only thing that can contradict a confession Strahd forced. What she actually remembers of the kitchen — the stag's memories, a blade, anything — needs deciding before she wakes.
Underneath all of it, unchanged: her memories of Nyss and of Myra's friendship are still stolen (session 13, Brother Aldric), and she still does not know. The pendant she gave away is now empty and hangs on Myra. The hollowness toward Myra wakes up with her.
The Questions That Need Answers Before She Wakes
- What does she remember from the stag? Nothing, fragments, or everything — each is a different scene. If she remembers the kitchen, she wakes knowing Mark's face.
- What did being held transformed do to her? Vess already flickers into deer form under panic (the d12 mechanic). Being locked in a form for days by Strahd's will is that mechanic weaponized. Whether the threshold moved — and in which direction — is a DM decision with mechanical teeth.
- Who is beside her when she opens her eyes? The first face determines the first conversation. Khione helped save her and has no history with her. Mark saved no part of her and has all the wrong history.
