Pipwick and Strahd
Area: Svalich Woods (vision), Castle Ravenloft (destination)
Status (as of session 24): Suspended with Pipwick. He has been inactive since session 7, and the party's reception at Ravenloft (session 23) happened without him — the moment this quest was built around passed with his chair empty. The curse and the unnamed price still exist. If Pipwick returns, the debt returns with him; Strahd does not forget private conversations.
What Happened
In session 7, Pipwick encountered Strahd in the Svalich Woods — not in person, but in vision. Strahd declared the forest his domain. He cursed Pipwick: banished from all forests across the land.
Two questions were explicitly left open:
- What did Pipwick see in his vision of Strahd, and what price was implied but not yet paid?
- When Strahd banishes someone from all forests, what does that mean in a land that itself feels alive and watching?
These have not been answered.
The Curse
Pipwick cannot enter any forest. In Barovia, forests are everywhere. The Svalich Woods line the road. The valley is ringed by them. The castle sits above a treeline. This has not prevented the party from functioning, but it has followed Pipwick at every step — the edge of a treeline that will not receive him, the sense of being on the outside of something that the rest of the party simply walks through.
The land is alive and watching. When Strahd issued the curse, Barovia itself enforced it. What that enforcement looks like at the threshold — whether Pipwick feels it as pressure, revulsion, physical resistance, or something more wrong — has not been defined. Define it before it matters in a session.
The Vision
What Pipwick actually saw in his vision of Strahd has not been recorded. This is a blank that belongs to the player — it was their character's private encounter and the contents were not shared with the party.
Before this quest surfaces, ask the player directly: What did Pipwick see? What was the price implied? If they don't know, offer them options:
- Strahd showed him something he was not supposed to see — a truth about Barovia, one of the party, or himself — and the price is silence.
- Strahd extracted a promise from Pipwick that Pipwick has not yet been called upon to keep.
- Strahd showed him how the party ends, and the price is that he knows.
- Strahd simply marked him, as one marks a tool one intends to use later.
Whatever the player chooses should inform how Pipwick behaves at Ravenloft. The vision was a private conversation. Strahd remembers it. Pipwick does too.
The Debt at Ravenloft
When the party arrives at Castle Ravenloft, Strahd will receive them. He has specific things to say to Vess, Taara, Myra. With Pipwick, it is different. He will acknowledge the gnome with the familiarity of someone who has already had the important conversation. He will not explain it to the others. He may simply say:
"And you. I wondered if you'd come."
What happens next depends on what the player decided the vision contained.
Lifting the Curse
The curse is Strahd's work, enforced by the land. It cannot be lifted by conventional magic while Strahd is alive and in control of Barovia. The possible paths:
- Strahd lifts it himself, as payment for something, as a test, or as a gesture whose meaning is unclear.
- Strahd is destroyed, and the curse ends with his dominion.
- A loophole is found — the curse specifies forests, not all vegetation. There may be places in Barovia that are technically not forests under whatever logic Strahd used. This is probably worth exactly one scene of dark comedy.
What This Quest Actually Is
This is not a location quest. It has no map and no treasure. It is the quest of finding out what Pipwick owes and deciding what to do with that knowledge.
The curse is the visible thread. The vision is the hook underneath it. The debt, if there is one, is the real weight. Pipwick has been carrying a private thing since session 7. Walking into Ravenloft means walking toward the person who gave it to him.
Timing Note
(Originally an urgent pre-Ravenloft note; overtaken by events — the reception happened in session 23 without Pipwick.) If Pipwick ever rejoins, the vision question must be settled with the player before his first scene back: Strahd will treat him as someone he has already had the important conversation with, and that moment cannot be improvised without knowing what Pipwick is carrying.
